Arddangosfa gelf dan ofal y Llunwyr Lluniau – grŵp lleol o artistiaid – yn cynnwys darnau gwaith amrywiol ar y thema ‘Soar y Mynydd’.

Adeiladwyd Capel Soar y Mynydd, capel Cymraeg y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd, ar Afon Camddwr yn 1822 gan y Parch. Ebenezer Richards o Dregaron a'i ymddiriedolwyr, i wasanaethu ffermwyr mynydd yr ardal anghysbell hon.

Mae'n anodd dychmygu y bu cymuned lewyrchus yn byw yn y cylch gan fod y capel yn gorwedd mewn tirwedd anghysbell, ddigroeso heb dŷ i'w weld gerllaw. Adeilad syml ydyw, yn atgoffa rhywun o'r ffermdy hir Cymreig, yn cynnwys capel diymhongar a thŷ dau-lawr. Yn y byd sydd ohoni fe ddylai fod mewn adfeilion, wedi ei adael blynyddoedd yn ôl - ond y mae'n parhau, ac yn cael ei gadw'n fyw gan gynulleidfa dryw sy'n dringo'r cwm i addoli ble does neb bellach yn byw.

I nifer mae'r capel bellach yn symbol teimladwy o Gymru. Tra bod y capel yn adleisio ei dynged, mae'n dal i gadw'r ffydd â'i gyndeidiau a, fel natur ei hun, mae'n glynu'n dynn i'w gred: mewn Duw, ac yn ei hanes a’i diwylliant Cymreig. Daw ymwelwyr o bell ac agos, ym mhob tywydd, yn gredinwyr ac yn anghredinwyr, yn feirdd ac artistiaid, ar bererindod i'r lle arbennig hwn. Caiff nifer eu cyffwrdd gan y profiad.

Mae'r Llunwyr Lluniau yn hoff o ddehongli tirwedd unigryw Cymru. Ar gyfer yr arddangosfa hon, dewison nhw syniad Capel Soar y Mynydd ble mae pob arlunydd wedi gorfod darganfod ei ffordd bersonol ei hun o wneud cysylltiad â'r capel, ei hanes a'i leoliad.

Capel Soar y Mynydd, a Welsh Calvinist Methodist chapel, was built on the River Camddwr in 1822 by Rev. Ebenezer Richards of Tregaron and his trustees, to serve the hill farmers of the remote upper valleys.

It is difficult to realise what a thriving community lived in these parts since the chapel lies in a high, remote, and inhospitable landscape with not a house in sight. It is a simple structure, reminiscent of the long Welsh farmhouse, incorporating both a modest chapel and a two storey house. In today’s world it should lie derelict, abandoned years ago — yet it still persists, kept alive by a dedicated congregation who still climb the valley to worship where no one lives.

For many it has become a poignant symbol of Wales. While the chapel echoes its forlorn fate it is still able to keep faith with its forbears and, like persistent nature itself, clings tenaciously to its beliefs: in God, and in its Welsh history and culture. Visitors from near and far, in all weathers, believers and non-believers alike, artists and poets, continue to make their quiet pilgrimage to this very special place. Many have been touched by the experience.

The Picturemakers are dedicated to depicting Wales' unique landscape. For this exhibition they chose the idea of Capel Soar y Mynydd where each artist has had to find a personal way of making contact with the Chapel, its history and its setting.
